Yesterday was one of those days...

My kids still have not gone sledding in the snow, but this happens every "winter" in Venice...

Fellow beardo and lifetime brethren, uncle G-MEZ joined the fun...

Andreini's finest slider, the original model... aka @maraserene

byrds and babes with my baby mama @hannahmas

Mason, Macie, Mandy and Me...were there too. Yes, I was annoyingly shooting pics with my vintage iPhone 4, but now I get to share them with you...

CALLING ALL ARTISTS for the 2nd Annual "A Nightmare On Helms St." Show...

Calling all artists for submissions!!!  The time has come again to resurrect those putrid pens & pencils and settle back your bones for the 2nd annual NIGHTMARE ON HELMS ST at The POPgallery. Conjure up your most grotesque, skin-pimpling piece for this year's oozy opening and help us raise some dead presidents for our favorite holiday charity The Spirit of Children! So, chop chop, and get to it, we've been dying to put on a show for you.
  • Eve of the Opening: October 25 2013
  • Dawn of the Deadline: Submissions due to our cozy crypt @ 3505 Helms Ave. Culver City, CA 90232 on Tuesday October 22. (Be sure to make your piece a killer one, the final edit for gallery curation will be Tuesday evening the 22nd and you don't want to find yourself on the chopping block)
  • To submit (maximum of 2 pieces please), you can cyber stalk Mr. McMullen at mikem@thepopstudio.com.
  • Artwork must be no larger than 22 x 30 inches (and we LOVE a good deadtime story too, so writers don't run away in fear)
All proceeds will go to THE SPIRIT OF CHILDREN (a charity committed to making hospitals less scary for kids), who thanks to last year's show received over $3,000 from POPgallery.

So join us again, if you dare, for a night of vicious visuals and deadly drinks. Sleep tight, if you can…SINcerely-The Graveyard Shift

No Binding Contracts...

I met this girl named Hannah, and we basically left our jobs and went to Tahiti until the money ran out (which was quickly), and moved in together...

...we looked like this. Yeah, no beard, no babies, tight necklaces, and much MUCH younger...

...then this happened last night, 11 years later.  Double happiness at platform #11 after Doug Aitken "threw us the best anniversary party" with his Station to Station Happening at Union Station downtown...(pic @here_now_sometimesthen)...

Amongst Giants...

I took a 48 trip up to the Bay area earlier this year with my friend and amazing photographer Lauren Ross to capture images for Ron Herman's newest concept shop in Yokohama Japan, called RHC.  We traveled around from Sausalito to Muir Woods and back across the Golden Gate bridge to hang with our friends on Ocean Beach.   When I opened up the new issue of Safari magazine (Japan) today, look what I found gracing the opening spread just before Louis Vuitton & Dolce Gabana...Lauren's beautiful image looking skyward in the enchanted forest!

Here's a couple more images Lauren shot while we made our way across the rock's at Muir Beach and the dunes at Ocean Beach with Mason and Serena...

Bring Into Being

Bring Into Being at POPgallery
An Interrelation of Works by Christi Jay & Cheryl Louise Humphreys
September 6th, 2013 - October 11th, 2013
Artists Reception Friday, September 6, 2013 7pm to 10pm
3505 Helms Ave Culver City, California

Press Release & Artist Bios
Through the exploration of surrendering control to their mediums, Christi Jay & Cheryl Louise Humphreys come together as a single force for Bring Into Being. Starting with elemental materials and the qualities they inherently possess, both artists respond to them with a disciplined process. It is in this tension of fixed versus impulse, restrictive versus fluid, where flaws give rise to virtues. Just as everything in the natural world does, their works and process have both yin and yang aspects, for instance shadow cannot exist without light, surrender cannot exist without control. Using water, air, earth – running them through the creative fire in order to bring their visions into being.

Christi’s work is inspired by shapes inherently formed in our minds and in the greater cosmos. A major focus of her work is in the peculiarities of the natural world, this focus is combined with sacred geometry and rituals in an attempt to find an instinctive balance of raw and refined. The components used are mostly repurposed or salvaged, allowing previously unwanted objects to live a new life.

Cheryl’s work seeks to draw the viewer in close, begging an intimate interaction, as if being read like a book. Through a contrast of organically made marks and meticulous printmaking techniques, she forms compositions, which transcend the two-dimensional. Inspired, at a young age, by her mother’s mark making as a hands-on interior designer, her work has a deep-rooted sensitivity to geometry and space.

Feel free to lift any of the images above for your social media channels of choice. We prefer instagram 'cause somehow over the last year and a half we've embraced the virtual square composition like Josef Albers handled a canvas, so we've supplied six perfect squares above shot by the wonder boy documenteur (new word, just invented it) Oliver Kish (aka I run with the Hunted dot com)... if you find yourself so inclined to post on our behalf, please drop #BRINGintoBEINGshow as well so we can see all the love in one cosmic digital thread.

For any of you that have not been to one of our POPgallery shows, they are probably the most creatively fulfilling acts that we get involved in as a studio.  Personally, I am so passionate about the gallery's efforts as it's our way to support the arts that are essential to our process and the individuals who we collaborate with everyday.  Every single dollar we make goes back to the artists themselves.  We appreciate your support of these amazing emerging artists and look forward to seeing you on September 6th... music by Lovefingers and we 100% guarantee a good time and leaving inspired! XO JM
