Learning "New Slang" with Jimmie Hines...

...the hands.  Tools of the trade...
 ...talkin' inspiration...

I'm forever thankful to Jimmie for his patience.  After 30 years of surfing, these were my first slices into foam.   I was so nervous...kept thinking I would make the fatal gouge...

Jimmie makes all of his own fins right there in the corner....
Jimmie and I talked fin templates and placement for quite sometime, and we pulled out a bunch of wood types to consider.  Ultimately I chose a dusty piece of old-growth redwood, and Jimmie did the rest...hand cut and split the plank so the grain was going in the same direction on each side.  This is probably pretty standard stuff if you work with wood often, but these fins are really the soul of the board in my perspective and it was the first time I saw this process... I was in awe.  Bill Livingston made the speed call on the direction of the grain...

 ...It's an art of balance...
Just watch the shadows... you can tell by the lack of dust that Jimmie did all the work...
I shot of few images of Jimmie doing his craft, but he's is a humble man, so this self portrait he sent me a few days later will have to do the trick.  Check out his website surfboardsbyjimhines, and between shaping boards for Japan and Patagonia, maybe you should get Jimmie to shape one for you.

Already here...
